The River Tagus reaches the end of its meandering journey through Portugal as it feeds in to the Atlantic Ocean near Lisbon. But it’s where your adventure will begin in the ‘City of Seven Hills’. History plays a huge part in Lisbon’s appeal with landmarks such as the 11th century Sao Jorge Castle and the medieval Belem Tower – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

Enjoying a coffee in the sunshine in one of Lisbon’s public squares is one of life’s little pleasures, especially if you’re by the sea. The city is also home to a zoo and oceanarium which are great days out if you’re away with your family. Lisbon’s tram network is a convenient way to get around with a mix of old and new trams to transport you to your destination. With so many hills, you’ll be glad you don’t have to walk everywhere. There are plenty of wonderful vistas over the city when you ascend from sea level.
