French-speaking Lausanne sits majestically on the lake of the same name in the west of Switzerland. The oldest part of the city rises up the surrounding hillside, with many structures surviving from the medieval era, including the twelfth century Gothic cathedral. Younger but similarly stunning structures provide homes to a range of important museum collections, though Lausanne is such a beautiful city to walk around we can think of nothing better than stopping at occasional coffee shops, having already taken a pleasure cruise across the clear waters of the lake, to enjoy the Swiss tradition of coffee and cake.
