Situated almost directly east of Lisbon in central Portugal, Evora is set around a historic town center focused on the Roman era Temple of Diana. Nearby the immense twelfth-century Gothic cathedral stands proud, while not too far away traditional whitewashed homes dot streets known for their Baroque-era architecture. Surrounding the city are a multitude of vineyards, which it’s possible to visit for tastings on day trips, as well as cork forest traditionally yielding the light wood from which corks for wine bottles were made, and which today have become fascinating cultural sights in their own right.
