Perhaps Transylvania’s most beautiful city, Sibiu is best known for the Saxon German architecture filling its Old Town and dating from before Colombus’ arrival in America in some instances. This picturesque city lying on the east bank of the Cibin River splits itself into a lower town of pastel-colored townhouses and an upper town dominated by larger mansions. Its narrow alleyways and cobbled streets are best explored on foot, but be sure not to miss the Bridge of Lies or Little Square, which is anything but. Nor should you skip the Brukenthal National Museum, featuring important works of art alongside history and pharmacy displays.
