Situated amid the beauty of Transylvania’s Carpathian Mountain range, Brasov probably has the most spectacular setting of any Romanian city. Its surrounding mountains provide dramatic vistas back to this city, whose origins date from the medieval period. The cobble-lined lanes of the Old Town include Strada Sforii, just 53 inches wide at its greatest extent. They are lined with a succession of beautiful buildings, from Baroque-era palaces and the Disneyesque Catherine’s Gate to the Gothic stylings of the so-called Black Church, and Saint Nicholas Church. Council Square has an array of dynamic cafes, as well as a former town hall turned regional history museum.
