Like something out of a childhood fairytale, Sighisoara in Transylvania has such a well-preserved Old Town that it was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. Behind its medieval city walls visitors will find an impressive array of merchants’ houses, charming lanes, and defensive towers which together made Sighisoara all but impregnable. Many of these structures today play host to craft stores, hotels, and cafes, with the ochre-walled House of Prince Vlad Tepes also welcoming visitors. It is the supposed birthplace of a man better known as Vlad the Impaler, inspiration for none other than Dracula himself.
