Make the most of magnificent Matera
Matera is the world’s third-oldest city, with ancient cave dwellings known as Sassi. People have lived here for over 12,000 years, and it’s an astonishing place to take an Italian vacation in the country's south.
Murgia Materana Park is the place to go for gorgeous hill walks and the best views across this unique city. The sunset vistas from the Church of Sant’Agostino are lovely and cast a warm glow over the houses, hotels and churches.
There’s an unmissable museum in the form of Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario, where you can learn more about life here in the past.
Walking around Matera is an amazing experience in itself. We’d highly recommend sampling as much of the local cuisine and wines as possible, with plenty of great places to choose from as you navigate the charming, narrow streets.
Matera is a real Italian treasure that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime.
